If you get a substantial build with the waterbase, you can wet sand final coat up to 1200 and then rub out with pumice and rottenstone, or some automotive rubbing compounds work also. Wet sanding uses a mixture of wet grit and sandpaper to sand down these flaws into a smooth surface. Choose your coarsest grit (600 if you are sanding primer or bodywork, 800-1000 if you are sanding a finished paint job).

Also, wet sanding will generally use 320 as this practice requires a very fine grit as well. For the oil base polyurethanes, the same applies to the sanding and finishing.

Polyurethane Finish Tip#1: Start With a Thick Coating. After you’ve applied your polyurethane and let it dry completely, fill a plastic spray bottle with cool tap water. Wet sanding is good for getting a smooth, glossy finish, especially on flat areas. In multi-coat processes, 400- to 600-grit-level sandpaper can be used, followed by 1500- to 2000-rated paper in the end to remove all blemishes. A little water provides lubrication and keeps the finish from clogging the paper. Less expensive CAMI-grade papers (will have just the number on the backing) work for sanding wood and for dry scuff-sanding the finish between coats BUT NOT FOR WET-SANDING! Using a gloss finish will give a glossy finish, but it will not be a flat surface. Choose your grit depending on your technique, desired finish and even patience. Unlike dry sanding, wet sanding is done not to shape a surface, but to remove the large scratches left by dry sanding. I have been using polyurethane for more than 30 years. Sandpaper is fairly useless on polyurethane because the heat generated by the friction causes the polyurethane to melt and block up the grit. P400 Sandpaper – Only oil finishes like tung oil & teak oil require the surface to be finished to this level. A spar urethane finish is applied to many different wood features, interior and exterior. Use 400-grit sandpaper to remove blemishes from the polyurethane surface. Lightly mist the surface with water so you can sand down the finish more efficiently. Sanding after each coat (except the last) rubs out imperfections and roughens the surface for better adhesion of the next coat. It's important to varnish the wood and dry-sand it carefully first. P320 Sandpaper – When sanding between coats of polyurethane, P320 will wipe off any surface inconsistencies left from the finish.
