Advice needed on rubbing out polyurethane I live in Belize and must create my furniture out of doors. Let’s face it, very few of us have spray booths and our shops are far from ideal finishing environments.
It is impossible to get a dust -free, absolutely smooth finish without buffing under most field applied conditions.
What makes the difference between a good finish and a great finish? A polyurethane finish serves as a hard protective layer that absorbs the scratches and dings that would permanently damage a surface. "Rubbing out" is an abrasive process so poly will fight it. Before we get into the nuts and bolts of how to rub out a finish, allow me to say a word about drying time. If there are stubborn nibs that stand up to the pads, grab 280-grit and be more aggressive.
Polishing Out Polyurethane Hand-rubbing a polyurethane finish with fine sandpaper or pumice can overcome poly's "plastic" or "removed" look, and bring back … They can form even when you use a high-quality paintbrush, however, and if you don't catch them while they're fresh, they become part of the finish. Minwax® Wipe-On Poly provides a durable layer of topcoat protection but it is thinner than regular polyurethanes.

Rubbing Out A Finish. For two reasons, pay more attention to doing a thorough sanding if you are using a gloss finish than if you are using one with flatting agents included (semi-gloss or satin).
Flatting agent consists of tiny particles embedded in the finish, and they actually make the coating slightly cloudy.
But its application is demanding and aggravating. Fortunately rubbing to a satin finish is easier:1--Sand the surface flat so there are no ridges, brush marks, depressions, dust specks, etc.

Now if you want a matte polyurethane finish or something with just a little bit of gloss to it, then all you need to use is this fine pad. Power buffers are only effective on gloss finishes.
Painters and furniture finishers hardly ever apply polyurethane with a roller because of its propensity for forming bubbles. Rubbing Out A Finish. I have been doing it in a fairly dust free room to avoid most of the dust spots, but I still get a few.
Alternatively, you can continue with finer grits of sandpaper and final rubbing with pumice and rotten stone to reach a high gloss surface (provided the finish you started with didn’t contain flattening agents, as anything labeled “satin” or “semi-gloss” does). However, if you're not happy with the gloss because of shine, try rubbing it down with 4 ought (0000) steel wool, available at any hardware or big box home store.

HD Download SD Download One of the biggest challenges woodworkers face is getting a nice smooth blemish-free finish. Thinning the polyurethane makes it flow on more smoothly and reduces brush marks.
But you will get a clearer satin-nibbed finish if you use gloss lac quer or varnish. If you regularly do high gloss finishes , you already understand this, but rubbing out a satin finish is just as important, and even more rewarding. So, the sander causes the rubbing pad to move and polishes the surface. (You can use a natural bristle brush with oil-based poly, but keep an eye out for loose brush hairs.) This is because satin lacquers and varnishes contain "flatting agents"—ultrafine particles of sand or wax that diffract light. Of course, I always get some dust specks in the finish. However, you can rub satin up to semi-gloss, matte up to satin, or rub any finish to a lower sheen. Polyurethane isn't exactly the most sophisticated wood finish, and it doesn't rub out as well as lacquer or shellac. It can be used on floors to touch up small areas that are worn or scratched. Rubbing to satin by hand is not that hard, but rubbing to gloss by hand is a lot of work.
Wet sanding removed the dust nibs, leveled the surface and produced a satin finish. With each scratch or scuff, however, the polyurethane gloss begins to dull, eventually becoming dirty and worn looking.
My preference is to use the Abralon pads , a 1000 will give you a matt sheen, 2000 a low end of a satin a 3000 is a high satin/semi gloss ( depending on how much you rub) and 4000 is a gloss. Take it to a high enough grit and you’ll be polishing the surface to a super high gloss. A finish that has not cured will not be hard enough to take an even scratch pattern from abrasives. Now if you want a matte polyurethane finish or something with just a little bit of gloss to it, then all you need to use is this fine pad. Polyurethane is the modern product most often used as varnish, or clear finish, on stained and painted wood surfaces. But as we mentioned above, advanced rubbing out is more involved; if you’re new to it, we recommend further research.
