DEATH AND DYING IN THE TIBETAN BUDDHIST TRADITION Compiled by: Ven. Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave this commentary on the Impermanence and Death section of the Wish-Fulfilling Golden Sun at the Sixth Kopan Course in April 1974. What follows is a summary of his teachings on death and impermanence. In Buddhist myths, he is lord of the Hell Realms and represents death, but more than anything else he represents impermanence.
The ordinary understanding of impermanence is accessible to all; we see old age, sickness and death.

Contemplation and meditation on death and impermanence are regarded as very important in Buddhism for two reasons : (1) it is only by recognising how precious and how short life is that we are most likely to make it meaningful and to live it fully and (2) by understanding the death process and … The greatest realization I’ve had about death happened to me last year in India. We followed the instructions as he told us to envision our loved one becoming extremely sick, watching them die, and then attending the funeral. The Buddha said: The life of mortals in this world is troubled and brief and combined with pain.
Buddhism, in contrast to most other faiths, deals with it head-on, in a very frank and quite detailed way, both in theory and in practical preparation. Do Buddhists contemplate death? With this in mind we should not fear death as it will lead to rebirth. Meditating on death. An understanding of impermanence does not have to be based on scriptural references; you can see it through bare perception from the death that afflicts all living beings.
Buddhist practices help us accept our finite lives. We tend to stay in places we find comfortable and safe, and we don't want them to change. There are different ways to meditate on the nine points. We look at the world around us, and most of it seems solid and fixed.

Most of us think the impermanence of all things is an unpleasant fact we'd rather ignore. First, is the obvious, ordinary understanding of impermanence. People who see the obviousness of death, but don’t apply this realization to themselves are like blind people with their eyes open, or someone with glass eyes. As I post this, it’s March 25 th, 2020. From Buddha’s teaching, everything exists impermanently, and it will eventually pass away as part of an ongoing reaction of birth and rebirth. The teacher asked us to visualize the death of a loved one.
So we could say that in depression we are fortunate, because we have a chance to taste death, to practice impermanence, to see death clearly for what it is.
Impermanence is an important principle in the Buddha’s teachings, and one that can lead to a great deal of freedom once it is seen clearly. Is this a cause for despondency?
The Buddha himself began his own spiritual search after watching a corpse being taken to its final resting place. Yama in the Pali Canon Before there was Buddhism, Yama was a Hindu God of death who first appeared in the Rig Veda .
Understanding Buddhist Beliefs on Death The Beliefs Around Death and Impermanence. Death may be the ultimate loss, the ultimate impermanence, but even on a lesser, everyday scale, impermanence and the loss it entails still happens more or less “later.” Something is here now in a particular way; later it will not be.
