Geographic Range. They can live in foothill grasslands, coastal sage/scrub, coastal bluff, sand dune areas, island chapparral, southern coastal oak woodlands, island woodlands, southern riparian woodland, pine forests, and coastal marshes. Of the eight islands, foxes are only found on six. Another habitat common in the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary is the sandy bottom. HABITAT: Island foxes occur in virtually every habitat on the Channel Islands, including valley and foothill grasslands, southern coastal dunes, coastal bluffs, southern coastal oak woodland, southern riparian woodland, Bishop and Torrey pine forests, coastal marsh, and communities of coastal sage scrub, maritime cactus scrub, and island chaparral.

The Channel Islands National Park has organized an island fox Recovery Team to help develop a strategy for understanding the decline, develop protocols for conserving the remaining foxes, and to formulate conservation techniques such as captive breeding and reintroduction to help the populations recover. In a classic case of unintended consequences, island fox numbers plummeted in the late 1990s largely due to a sudden invasion of nonnative golden eagles. In the mid 1990’s, Island Fox populations started to decline and in 2004 they were added to the endangered species list. They inhabit coastlines, sand dunes, grasslands, marshes, foothills, woodlands, chaparral, scrub, sagebrush, and more. The Channel Island skunk is one of two terrestrial carnivores living on the island, the other being the Island Fox. The island fox (Urocyon littoralis) is found only on the Channel Islands located between 19 and 61 miles off the coast of Southern California.

Sandy and muddy bottom provides a perfect habitat for the burrowing tube …

The Channel Island fox case involved several complex factors that led to their near-extinction and to their recovery. They have a body length between 48 and 50 cms (19 - 20 inches), a tail length between 11 and 29 cms (4.3 - 11.4 inches) and they weigh between 1 and 3 kgs (2.2 - 6.6 lbs). There are six subspecies, each unique to the island it lives on, reflecting its evolutionary history. Golden eagles were able to successfully colonize the island, and begin breeding, because of the availability of piglets. Each island has its … Island, Kit & Swift Fox Working Group - Brian Cypher and Tim Coonan are the coordinators of the Island, Kit & Swift Fox Working Group. Despite having the lowest known genetic diversity of any mammal, Channel Island fox populations ( Urocyon littoralis ), which reside on their namesake islands off the coast of California, seem to defy what we know about long-term species survival. Much of the ocean's water had turned to ice and the level of the remaining seas were lower than they are today. On Santa Rosa Island, for instance, the population went from more than 1,500 foxes in 1994 to 14 in 2000. Among the gray foxes sampled, the haplotypes that were more closely related to the island fox were from Lassen/Shasta counties in northern California. The Channel Island spotted skunk (Spilogale gracilis amphialus) is an insular endemic carnivore and a subspecies of the western spotted skunk (Spilogale gracilis).Little is known about their exact variations from the mainland spotted skunk and variations between locations, resolution of which awaits further genetic and morphologic evaluation. If two Channel Island fox's have a pup, they share their land together.

Each island fox population is recognized as a separate endemic or unique subspecies. About 16,000 to 18,000 years ago the world experienced its last major ice age. The Chumash considered the fox to be a sacred animal–a pet of the sun, and possibly a dream helper. Predation by golden eagles was the primary mortality factor for foxes on the northern Channel Islands, but there were other threats as well. Urocyon littoralis, the island grey fox, can be found on the six largest Channel islands, about 30 to 98 kilometers off of the southern California coast in North America. These islands are Santa Catalina, San Clemente, San Nicholas, San Miguel, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa Islands. “People who didn’t know about the island fox were as excited about their recovery as those who had been working on it for years,” Henry said.
