Synopsis: Asako I & II (2018) – College student Asako falls in love at first sight with Baku after meeting at a photography exhibit. Asako (Erika Karata) is a pretty young woman who falls in love at first sight with the mopey, apparently irresistible Baku (Masahiro Higashide) in a meet-cute so strenuously fanciful that it might be a joke on Hamaguchi’s part. She falls in love with Baku, a free-spirit. While Asako I & II ’s narrative leaps and languid pacing may be off-putting to jaded audiences, it keenly encompasses a plethora of themes and is bound to pull at the most hardened of heartstrings.
Asako I & II is glassy and beautiful, in possession of a visual sheen and formal grace that is something beyond the real. Two years later, working in Tokyo, Asako sees Baku again — or, rather, a young, solid businessman named Ryohei who bears a striking resemblance to her old flame. Two years later, Asako now lives in Tokyo and meets Ryohei.

Its characters have a limited agency perhaps not dissimilar to that of zombies, and we have the increasingly disturbing sense that there is nobody home.

And while the desire to be both with an aloof, mysterious, reckless, and sensual lover and a more stable, reliable, wholly committed lover is an easy narrative to weave, what Hamaguchi does very well is create an atmosphere of absence.
